My Reading Snapshot

By the end of Year 6 I need to reading fluently. I want to have the confidence to adjust (by rereading, slowing down or focussing on the most difficult part of) my reading when I come across difficult parts. Here is a snapshot of my reading.

I think I am good at:

Feedback from Whaea Lana
I always enjoy hearing Anthony read. As a Year 5 Anthony is above in reading. He confidently reads academic and content specific words and phrases. He uses the punctuation within texts to help him understand and read long sentences, including complex sentences that have a lot of information, fluently.

An area Anthony could develop is strengthening his understanding of words. When unsure about a word he could go beyond text clues and learn about the meaning, origin and pronunciation of the word (debris and analysis) . Online language site

Wacky story

Today my class and I explored a site called Wacky Stories. I think this site is funny and entertaining because you in charge of the story and you can make up words like armpit apple and stuff like that. To be able to create your story you need to know things about parts of speech such as singular nouns and plural nouns. If you get really stuck theres a help button at the bottom.

Burp!

Armpit Peri had everything a fat peri could ask for. He had ugly food, a big, hairy bed, and the stink Peri family to look after him.

One morning Armpit Peri woke up. “I'm hungry!” he said. He went down to the farting toilet but everyone in the Stink Peri family was still asleep. “I guess I'll have to find my own breakfast,” he said.Armpit Peri went outside and farted down the street. On the sidewalk, he saw an ugly fart. “Gulp!” Down went the fart. “Not bad!” said Armpit Peri.

Next, Armpit Peri headed for the park. There he found a pair of flying armpit just sitting on a bench. “Gulp! Gulp.” Down went the flying armpit. “Mmmm, smelly!” said Armpit Peri.Armpit Peri was feeling very homeless as he skipped over to a video store. There he saw some tasty video games. “Gulp! Gulp! Gulp!” Armpit Peri swallowed Minecraft and goku whole.

“Oh no!!! It must be time to go home,” said Armpit Peri. He hunted back home and up the stairs to his hairy bed.

“Breakfast! Time for breakfast, Armpit Peri!” called Mrs. Stink Peri.“I don't feel very well,” groaned Armpit Peri. “It must have been those farting apple I ate for supper last night.” Burp!

Persuasive writing and reflection

I’m Bringing Bikes Back!

I believe that we should be able to bring our motorbikes to school. We can’t at the moment, isn’t that outrageous! Come on why can’t we? We’ll be safe. We could do it on our cross country course. Safe as bro!

One reason I think we should be allowed to bring our bikes because riding motorbikes are fun. Haven’t you felt the cool breeze in your hair before? And Lunch breaks are boring, I just can’t take it anymore! Seriously! Our parks have gone pretty boring. Can you stand us being bored out our brains! And we’ll be getting adrenaline in the process so it would be the best thing in school!

Another reason why is because it will be safe and it will be away from everyone because we will ask if we could use the paddock and we will be wearing helmets and protective gear etc. See, like I said safe as bro! And the only people that know how to drive will be able to ride them. We will die from boredom.

Therefore, in summary I think we should be able to bring our motorbikes to school because they are fun and we will be safe. I’m bringing bikes back! Brm Brm Brm Brm Brm de Brm de Brm.

What I did well
I used the language feature rhetorical questions to hook/engage with the audience.
I used language features such as emotive language to make my reader feel emotion, I used some rhetorical questions, I used figurative language and I used great connectives and I structured my work well.
What I can do to try improve my persuasive writing
Try use facts to support my argument and use more supporting detail.

This term in writing I have been learning about persuasive writing.

Kia ora, this term in writing I have been learning about persuasive writing. I have learnt that the purpose of persuasive writing is to change someones mind about something.

I have also learnt about the structure of persuasive writing. This is how you organise your ideas for persuasive writing. First you need your introduction with your subject that you want to persuade someone. Then your first main reason with supporting detail. Then you need your second main idea with some more supporting detail and you end with a summary about your main ideas.

WALT think about the purpose and audience of our recount and create a success criteria that suits our purpose

On Saturday in the first week of the July holidays me, my mum and dad were going to Auckland because me and my dad were catching a plane to Christchurch. We had just had a three day long storm and it had just finished.

Later that same day….

We got stopped because the dirty and murky flood had went all over Mangakahia road. A little while later, a big Toll truck came and then my dad walked in front of the big truck to help it get through. And a little Toyota (tried) to follow the Toll truck. But, unfortunately with his eight month pregnant wife, the Toyota drowned. The Toll truck got through and carried on. In the end we had to tow him out. When my dad got out of the murky and dirty flood, we turned around, went back home and my dad had a shower.

After my dad had a shower we tried the Moerewa way. But….. We got stopped again by the police at the top of the Moerewa hill. “Where are you going today?” asked the policeman “Auckland” replied my dad “nah, not today, maybe not even for weeks. There’s a big slip on SH1. Yeah, took out ¾ of the road.’’ said the policeman. Was our flight to Christchurch over? Was it? We’ll just have to wait and see I suppose. “Nah, just dropping this fella off in Moerewa” my dad said. Because we had just picked up this man up off the side of the road.

After we dropped the man off at his house we went through Kawakawa and onto SH1. But we got stopped again because the road was blocked. “Nah can’t go past here because there’s a big slip at the bottom of the hill.” Said the policeman. Was our flight really over? Hopefully not.

So, after that we tried the Mangakahia way again. The water was still over the road but we could get through that part that was too deep before but the next part was too deep, so we tried the Dargaville back road and that was a miracle. Guess why. It worked!! Whew, our flight wasn’t over. Thank God for the backroads.

I will never forget the hustle and bustle of that day, or the feelings. It was cool on Air New Zealand because you get free stuff.

We are learning to write our own successful mystery narrative. I hope you enjoy.

Hair
By Anthony Liefting

Did you know, just a few years ago, something strange happened to me, the story goes like this. I  was 14 and there was my mum, Sarah who was 34. A few years ago we moved back to our old village in the North American forests. We lived inside a hollow tree. There was only my room and mum’s room, I wasn’t allowed in mum’s room. That was where she puts her evidence, as she says.

Everyday Sarah went looking for evidence. “What are you looking for? Can I have a look?” I often asked “no sweetheart, but trust me, you don’t want to know, you might scare yourself half to death”

One day Jordan woke up with a heavy feeling in his feet, then he looked down “aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, muuuuuuuuuum!!!!!” mum came rushing to my bed “what” said mum “look at my feet!” yelled Jordan “stay here i’ll be home before dark” she yelled as she ran deeper into the forest.

A few minutes had passed since mum left and things started getting real ugly and real fast. Hair just started bursting out of my skin, I ran to the mirror and looked at myself. “Aaaaahhh,
whats happening to meeeee!!! Aaaahhh” then all of a sudden everything went black.

It was only a few hours later when I awoke. I looked at myself. “Aaaaaahhhhhh, i’m hairy!” I burst through the back door and stumbled deeper into the forest, I knew I wasn’t allowed to go deeper into the forest, but I had to find mum.

About twenty or so minutes later I spotted her. She was looking around trees. “Mum!” I
screamed. Sarah looked at me like who are you for a moment and then she yelled “get back to the house i’ll explain everything to you there”.

When we got back home mum explained everything, “so, your saying, by some mystery, Bigfoot blood runs in our family and your going to turn into one too?” said Jordan “yeh” said Sarah.

A few days later when Jordan turned completely into a Bigfoot he decided to live freely as a Bigfoot and mum said “when I turn into one i’ll come visit you” “OK” replied Jordan. So Jordan lived happily ever after.

I am learning to plan and write a mystery narrative. I hope you enjoy.

Did you know, a few years back on an isolated hill, something terrible happened. The story goes like this. A few years ago on an isolated hill there was Jordan who was 16 years old, there was Ellah who was 13 years old and there was Stan the dad. Stan was into science, he worked for LABCO.

One day Stan went down to the basement to do some type of science experiment. During this time Jordan and Ellah played around and done fun stuff together.

About 10 hours later Stan came back from whatever he was doing. “Lets have tea, i’m starving” he exclaimed. So he started to cook some steak on the stove. A few minutes later tea was served “salt anyone?” asked dad “Yes please” Jordan and Ellah both said at the same time “why aren’t you having salt?” asked Jordan. “Uum, i'm on a diet” said Stan. That’s strange, normally dad has tonnes of salt on his steak Ellah thought. After tea Jordan and Ellah both brushed their teeth and went to bed.

The next day was Stans work day when he had to go to LABCO to work. But before he went to work he said to his children “whatever you do, don’t you dare go into that basement” “but what if we need something out of there?” questioned Ellah “just don’t go in there!!!!” screamed dad and stormed off to work. “What’s in there that’s so important?!” thought Ellah aloud “no one knows, look dad didn’t even organise a baby sitter” “come lets go in, i learnt how to pick locks at school” said Ellah excitedly “but….” “come on it’d be fun” Jordan was cut off by Ellah “OK then, I suppose a few minutes couldn’t hurt.”

So down they went, picked the lock and went in. In the basement was almost lifelike plants and some kind of machine in the corner and a cupboard in the far end of the basement “Jordan, Ellah, Jordan, Ellah” whispered something from the cupboard “w-w-what was that” said Ellah with her mind swirling “let’s go have a look” said Jordan.

So Jordan opened the cupboard and there was a person who looked just like Stan. Both of them could hear their heart pumping in their head of confusion “w-w-who are youasked Ellah, “i’m your real dad” Stan said, “tell me about it” Jordan asked. “OK, so, when I was doing an experiment on a weight loss machine, I tested myself and it came out with a clone that murdered me and he went out to murder you guys” “oooook?” “here, take this tazor and zap him and then come back down and free me and then we’ll turn him him into compost because he’s just a plant” “ok” said Jordan.

So when clone dad came home Jordan zapped him with the tazor and then went down to the basement and freed Stan the real dad and turned fake dad into compost and used him in the garden. Then life turned back to normal and Stan promised never to test himself on newly made inventions ever again.
