Should Art Be Compulsory In Schools?

Imagine a world without the Mona Lisa, attractive food, even good bridges. Did you know, that art can set you up for a number of jobs? Including: a video game designer, an architect, a sound designer, an art professor, even a food artist!… the list goes on and on. The jobs come in quite a variety as well, including: Animation, architecture, design, education, entertainment etc… quite a variety, eh? Just imagine a world without these. This is why I believe art should be compulsory in schools.

Not only is art fun and has a tonne of variety, research shows that visual arts can improve literacy, and instrumental art can improve numeracy. So if you're good at drawing, you're probably good at literacy, and if you're good at playing instruments, you're probably good at maths. Art also: promotes creativity, promotes problem solving skills, art helps kids to connect etc… So art has quite a lot of benefits and it can be pretty fun if you choose the right one for you.

Let's talk about instrumental art for a moment. Studies show that the kids who do music are more satisfied with life overall, are happier and have a greater sense of community. It can also help develop hand-eye coordination, so instrumental art, a thumbs up from me.

Now let's talk about the visual arts. Studies show that kids who do visual art are fundamental to the development of individual potential, social responsibility, cultural awareness, contribution to the intellectual, aesthetic, emotional, social, and physical development of the individual, it provides students with pleasure, enjoyment, and a deepened awareness of themselves and their place in their environment, community and culture.
